> AutoPatcher Adds Windows 7 Support
Posted by romerale - 03-9-10 11:40 - 0 comments
QUOTE
AutoPatcher was one of the first software based services that allowed Windows users to download all released service packs and patches for their operating system and Microsoft Office. The service had been in deer troubles in the past thanks to an disagreement with Microsoft. They did come back from that and have changed the way AutoPatcher operates.
AutoPatcher is offered as a portable program that can be executed after unpacking the download file. It will then display a list of all available release packages that can be downloaded to the local computer system.
Available for selection are the core program files. operating system patches for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista, Microsoft Office XP, 2003 and 2007, the Microsoft .net Framework, DirectX, Java runtime and Adobe Reader. Most release packages are offered in all languages while some only in specific languages.
Windows 7 was integrated in the latest release of AutoPatcher. AutoPatcher only supports 32-bit operating systems right now which means that the Windows 7 patches are also only offered for the 32-bit version of the operating system.

The main benefit of using AutoPatcher is that it will download all patches that have been released to the local computer system with the option to install them afterwards. This means that the patches can be installed while the computer is offline. It also means that the patches can be distributed to other computer systems to patch those as well.

AutoPatcher can be downloaded from the developer’s website, it should run on all Microsoft operating systems including 64-bit editions.

Sinn7 Status 24|96
QUOTE
Other desktop audio and monitoring stations may look a little dull if set side by side with the Sinn7 Status 24|96, a luxe, high-end recording interface and monitor switch controller.

The Status 24|96 has plenty of I/O options. It features four inputs and four outputs with 24-bit, 96 kHz signal processing; two XLR / 6.3 mm jack microphone-combination connections with shiftable phantom power; one stereo RCA input with GND a grounding screw and phono / line switch; and digital I/O. The unit's flexible outputs allow monitor speakers to be connected via XLR, jacks, and RCA. Up to three pairs of monitor speakers can be connected to the interface and switched, and for your convenience, the two headphones connections have separate volume controllers. The Status 24|96 also boasts USB 2.0 connectivity with low latency ASIO / CORE audio drivers.

On its face, the unit sports a large master volume controller with monitor select and mute switch, separate volume controllers for monitor pairs A and B, and separate blue-white LEDs for all inputs and outputs for direct visual monitoring.

A notable feature is the Monitor-Mix function that allows inputs to be monitored directly without latency, software playback to be monitored, or both signals to be individually mixed. The Monitor-Source function lets you monitor Master pairs A and B or individually mix them.

The new Status 24|96 is housed in a firm metal case in a matt-black finish with embedded acrylic cover plate.

Ever wondered where your Mac's disk space has gone?
With DaisyDisk you can free up disk space by quickly finding and deleting big, useless files. The program scans any mounted disk and displays it on the sunburst map, where segments mean files and folders, proportionally to their sizes. The map is easy to read and navigate. You can also quickly preview any file and reveal it in Finder to delete.

Requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
or above

> Microsoft Takes Down Whistleblower Site
Posted by danielk - 02-26-10 06:23 - 1 comments
Microsoft has managed to do what a roomful of secretive, three-letter government agencies have wanted to do for years: get the whistleblowing, government-document sharing site Cryptome shut down.

Microsoft dropped a DMCA notice alleging copyright infringement on Cryptome’s proprietor John Young on Tuesday after he posted a Microsoft surveillance compliance document that the company gives to law enforcement agents seeking information on Microsoft users. Young filed a counterclaim on Wednesday — arguing he had a fair use to publishing the document, a full day before the Thursday deadline set by his hosting provider, Network Solutions.

Regardless, Cryptome was shut down by Network Solutions and its domain name locked on Wednesday — shuttering a site that thumbed its nose at the government since 1996 — posting thousands of documents that the feds would prefer never saw the light of day.

Microsoft did not return a call for comment by press time.

The 22-page document (.pdf) contains no trade secrets, but will tell Microsoft users things they didn’t know.

The Microsoft® Online Services Global Criminal Compliance Handbook (.pdf) also goes so far as to provide sample language for subpoenas and diagrams on how to understand server logs.

Other things you might not know and which Microsoft (sometimes oddly) doesn’t want you to know?

Microsoft retains only the last 10 login records for Windows Live ID. As for your instant messages, it tells police that it keeps no record of what anyone says over Microsoft Messenger - though it will turn over who is on your buddy list.

And if you like to use Microsoft’s social networking products — like its old-school Group mailing list or its Facebook-like Spaces product, be aware that it’s very social when it comes to law enforcement or court subpoenas.

> Kaspersky Lab patents cutting-edge hardware antivirus solution
Posted by cytochrome - 02-20-10 16:33 - 0 comments
Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces the successful patenting in the USA of a hardware-based antivirus system that effectively combats rootkits.

The new technology makes use of a hardware-based antivirus solution whose primary function is to neutralize the most widespread type of threat – malicious programs that store themselves or infect files on a computer's hard drive. The patented antivirus program scans data that is written to the hard disk, identifying and blocking malicious programs.

The patented device is installed between a drive (hard drive or SSD) and the computing unit (CPU and RAM) and is connected to the system bus or integrated into the disk controller. The hardware antivirus solution allows or blocks writing data to disk, providing threat alerts and information about its operation to the user (user dialog is possible if the hardware antivirus control utility is installed on the PC). The device can work on a standalone basis or in conjunction with a software antivirus application.

Since it is implemented on the hardware rather than software level, the technology is not dependent on the operating system's configuration and can effectively combat malicious programs that elevate their privileges in the system, e.g., dangerous malware such as rootkits. Rootkits hook the operating system's functions, enabling them to actively resist their detection and removal by software antivirus solutions that operate in the same environment. Specifically, rootkits can block an antivirus application from being started, track its actions and recover the malicious processes removed by the antivirus application, modify removal settings in the system registry, etc. Such activity will be ineffective in the case of a hardware solution that does not operate in the infected operating system's environment, and the rootkit can be quickly neutralized.

The patented device uses its own updateable antivirus databases that are protected from malicious code and faulty records during updates. Since the device has a CPU and RAM of its own, it does not consume any resources on the computer to which it is connected. A separate power supply can be connected to it if necessary.
