It just won’t die: Windows XP gets another six months |
| Posted by romerale - 10-4-08 12:10 - 0 comments |
|
QUOTE Microsoft has stepped up its effort to promote its Vista operating system, but Windows XP just isn’t going away. The company reportedly extended the OEM downgrade timeline once again: As of now, system builders can still offer Windows XP downgrades to their customers and will be able to do so until Vista’s second birthday.
Microsoft’s deadline for allowing OEMs to sell PCs with systems that are “downgraded” from Windows Vista to XP is still a moving target. Initially planned to expire on June 30 of this year, Microsoft at first granted an extension to July 31. However, OEMs are still selling the downgrade option (often for a premium) and, according to new reports, the deadline apparently has been officially extended for six more months to January 31, 2009. The information is based on one leaked email sent to an OEM.
The decision indicates that there is still substantial demand for Windows XP and demand for Vista and its features may not be quite as convincing as the Microsoft usually claims. However, it also raises questions about the firm’s recently launched $300 million Windows advertising campaign that is designed to push Vista sales and there are certainly reasons to believe that a user who now purchases a Windows XP PC is unlikely to ever upgrade to Windows Vista: Windows 7 is expected to arrive in early H2 2009.
As before, the XP downgrade is available from some OEMs with the purchase a PC with Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate.
Recent market data showed that more than one third of new PC buyers choose to downgrade their Vista installations to Windows XP. Another research revealed that enterprise users, one of Microsoft's key markets, are even less inclined to dump XP for the newer operating system. http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/39594/140/

Infamous vendor of “AntiVirus XP” badware sued |
| Posted by romerale - 10-1-08 11:53 - 0 comments |
|
QUOTE The software purveyor behind AntiVirus XP, a fake anti-virus package, has been sued and will hopefully be put out of business.
There has been plenty of information available on this organization for some time, yet unsuspecting consumers continue to hand over their own money for what amounts to malware. Alex Eckelberry at Sunbelt Software has been tracking the fake software epidemic for some time, documenting some of the unmitigated gall these badware purveyors have displayed. They have even gone so far as to take out Google AdWords to push their malware. A solid breakdown of the legal events is available here.
The important thing to take away is that evaluating the quality of security products is incredibly difficult. Even independent agencies find it challenging to determine the relative effectiveness of different anti-virus products. The sad fact is that the only individuals who stand a chance of acquiring security software based upon merit alone are those of us who are in the security industry. The remainder are forced to rely upon word of mouth and marketing, and that leaves an inherent gap for badware vendors.
For those of you who have either bought AntiVirus XP or know someone who has, I recommend you remove it immediate and install a real anti-virus package from any number of reputable firms, such as Norton (Symantec), McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky, Sunbelt, Panda, and the like. If you are unsure regarding whether or not your software is classified as badware, you should consult groups such as the Berkman Center’s Stop Badware initiative. http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1980 Yeah, but what about all the systems he corrupted and destroyed and the costs people had to pay for fixing or reinstalls???!

Toxic Mac Pro’s emitting benzene? |
| Posted by romerale - 10-1-08 11:44 - 0 comments |
|
QUOTE Mac Pro owners, listen up.
A french newspaper Liberation.fr has published a report (English translation) stating that Mac Pro owners run the risk of getting diseases as dangerous as leukemia (blood cancer) simply by using their computer. The newspaper was warned by a national agency scientist that the smell (already detected by many Mac Pro users on Apple forums) is actually toxic, composed of several toxins, including benzene.
An Apple Core reader requesting anonymity, sends the following details:
Here’s a proof that the smell problem was previously known, check this page. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=962025&tstart=0
The real news here is that the smell is toxic… but still no official answer from Apple. I’ve submitted this piece of news to let english-speaking Mac Pro users know about it (since it was published in french). Libération is a very well known newspaper in France, it’s not a blog or anything like that, so normally you should be able to trust this article.
I just called AppleCare (in France). They confirmed the problem but they told me it only concerned Mac Pros built before 2008 (without mentioning if being built in China was a condition, as suspected by users on the Apple forums). Mine is early 2008 so I should not worry they said.
When I asked them to send me this answer in written form, even by e-mail, they refused. They put me on hold for 40 minutes to forward me to the customer relations service, but apparently they didn’t want to talk to me so I got instead a level 2 technical agent who told me the exact same thing: don’t worry, we guess your Mac Pro is safe, but we can’t confirm in written form which Mac Pro have toxicity problems until Apple decides to communicate about it. Apple did nothing since they knew of this problem, which may be in the beginning of 2007, so we can still wait very long for any change in their policy…
The fact that my Mac Pro may not be concerned is not the problem I have with their answer. The problem is that I could very well own one of those toxic Mac Pro and never know about it, with Apple never issuing a Mac Pro recall to prevent serious health problems. Considering the problem exists for more than a year, some people have been knowingly exposed to toxins, and if some of them ever develop a blood cancer it will not be before some years, and Apple will silently get out of this problem. This problem is as bad for Apple as the contaminated milk problem for China, and it may very well be the first scandal of this kind in the computer industry.
Apple doesn’t want to confirm which Mac Pro have a problem because they know users could sue them for this reason. I invite all Mac Pro owners around the world to send a letter to Apple and ask them which Mac Pro have the toxicity problem, in written form. If Apple doesn’t change its methods very fast, a class-action lawsuit may unfortunately be the next step… http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=2319

Yahoo Unveils Messenger 9.0 |
| Posted by romerale - 09-24-08 11:54 - 0 comments |
|
QUOTE Yahoo Messenger 9.0 became available on Tuesday--a week after Yahoo's target launch date and interestingly, a week after Microsoft released its beta update of Windows Live Messenger. Yahoo Messenger 9.0 as dramatic an update of its instant messenger as Windows Live beta is of Windows Live Messenger 8.5, and it introduces some pleasant improvements over version 8.1 that will satisfy Yahoo loyalists. Among them are a redesigned interface with more skins, more space, and the excellent ability to see scaled public images and videos in the chat window.
If you're familiar with the beta version of Yahoo Messenger 9.0, this final build adds more conspicuous spam alerts and the ability to chat with friends directly from their Web site or online profile page. We'll discuss both later on in this review.
Interface
A bolder, more spread-out display graces Yahoo Messenger 9.0, complete with larger avatar thumbnails and room to read a contact's status message. Also new, Yahoo now updates your status with your recent activity on Yahoo's Buzz, Avatars, 360, or MyBlogLog--for example, when you change your avatar's outfit. Those who can't get used to the new spacing can revert to the familiar compact view.
Importing contacts by bulk is another biggie feature that makes its debut in Yahoo Messenger 9.0. The service, handled by third-party operator TrueSwitch, scours your other IM, e-mail, and social networking accounts--including Outlook and Facebook--for friends that are also signed up on Yahoo IM. TrueSwitch will send requests on your behalf for friends to add you to their Messenger accounts, and you'll have the option of inviting your unaffiliated contacts to join up with Yahoo.
Other changes include new skins, including a dark theme, which you'll find by clicking the button to the right of the Messenger logo. Windows Live Messenger beta took skins a step further with themes that incorporate background images. While some Windows Live scenes are very nice, Yahoo's visual picker saves you an extra step when choosing a new look.
Like Windows Live Messenger beta, Yahoo Messenger's contact search bar finds buddies quickly by checking your IM list and your Yahoo address book. In another similarity, Yahoo Messenger's status field supports emoticons and links. Finally, Yahoo Messenger 9.0 highlights power users with an icon of a medal or crown placed next to their name (your choice) and rewards them with more avatar accessories and priority customer care.
Chat window
The Yahoo Messenger 9.0 chat window looks a little more airbrushed than in version 8.1, but the biggest difference is also the best--a feature that embeds scaled maps, images, video players, and public photos when you or a friend drops in a link ending in .jpg, .gif, .png, or .bmp.
Being able to comment on photos and watch YouTube videos without leaving the IM window is a treat, and something no other instant messaging client currently offers. While Windows Live Messenger beta can boast about its fun feature for mapping certain profile pictures to common emoticons (like happy, sad, and winking), being able to reference your IM window when you're writing about a photo or video is more useful overall.
If you're a fan of emoticons, Yahoo's new Messenger 9.0 adds six new expressions to version 8.1's gallery, including a smiling head giving a thumbs-up and a little guy rocking out. Yahoo has heeded the advice of beta testers and stopped using dime-size emoticons that, while easier to see, were also less defined around the edges. Although we also prefer the traditional smiley faces, as long as Yahoo has that gallery of larger images on hand, the emoticons' display size ought to be the user's choice. The behavior of Yahoo Messenger's IM window otherwise remains the same.
Spam control
IMers plagued with spam messages (also called spim) will appreciate some small alterations in 9.0. The warning message on a conversation window is bolder, for one, and Yahoo has added a button to the offline message window that lets you report the impostor message without having to log on to Yahoo's site.
Yahoo Messenger Pingbox
Pingbox is a brand-new feature in Yahoo Messenger that lets Web site owners and Yahoo visitors chat in real time. Site owners--bloggers, eBay sellers, or social networking buffs, for instance--can embed a Pingbox chat window in their site that communicates with your Yahoo Messenger application and automatically shows up as a (temporary) contact on your buddy list for as long as you're on their site. If so inclined, you can chat about the site and even save the site owner as a contact.
While Yahoo Messenger 9.0 has one or two rough edges--mostly the same niggles about heavy branding for other Yahoo services and the bundled Yahoo Toolbar, the visual improvements and the ability to share multimedia within the chat screen are no-brainer reasons to upgrade.
That said, anyone who's tired of Yahoo's style and layout may also want to compare Yahoo Messenger 9.0 with Windows Live Messenger beta, the biggest IM network threat to Yahoo's desktop messenger, or to Trillian, Digsby beta, or Pidgin--all competing desktop apps that also let you chat with friends on other networks. http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-10044142-12.html

E-mail, Photo, Movie Making Programs stripped from Windows 7 |
| Posted by romerale - 09-23-08 21:20 - 0 comments |
|
QUOTE Microsoft has decided that Windows 7 won't include built-in programs for e-mail, photo editing, and movie making, as was done with Windows Vista, CNET News.com has learned. The software maker included Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Mail, and Windows Movie Maker as part of Vista, but later chose to offer separate downloadable Windows Live programs that essentially replaced those components with versions that could connect to online services from Microsoft and others.
Microsoft told CNET News late Monday that it has decided to remove those features entirely from Windows 7 and instead offer only the service-connected Windows Live versions as optional free downloads. Earlier on Monday, Microsoft had declined to say how it was handling things. In a follow-up interview on Monday, Windows Vista general manager Brian Hall said Microsoft made the decision to remove the tools from Windows for several reasons, including a desire to issue new operating system releases more quickly than it has in the past. The move also removes the confusion of offering and supporting two different programs that perform essentially similar functions. "It makes it much cleaner," Hall said. Lastly, he said, making the Windows Live tools completely separate from the operating system paves the way for Microsoft to work selectively with specific partners. "We can do things with specific partners to enable really great experiences that might be hard in Windows," Hall said. Antitrust rules make it hard for Microsoft to tie operating system features to specific services.
Microsoft last week rolled out the latest "Wave 3" releases of its Windows Live programs, adding Windows Live Movie Maker to the mix of programs, which includes Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Live Mail as well as blogging tool Windows Live Writer and instant messaging program Windows Live Messenger. While Windows XP and earlier releases had an instant messaging program built in, Microsoft took out that feature in Windows Vista.
Hall said it was too soon to say if the "Wave 4" release would precede Windows 7 or be coincident to it. Microsoft has said it will have Windows 7 on the market by January 2010, while CEO Steve Ballmer has said he is pushing for a release next year. "We'll do Wave 3 and then we'll figure it out," Hall said. It remains to be seen just how Microsoft will distribute the Windows Live programs in conjunction with Windows 7-based PCs. Presumably the company could strike deals with computer makers or retailers to include the software, or links to download it. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10048142-56.html

Beatscape is billed as "the ultimate remixing instrument". Combine audio clips from multiple recording sessions and use the 16 pads to sequence them live or into a SONAR track. Easily load key clips or loops from two separate projects, blend them together, and trigger one shot samples - all on the fly from Beatscape's up-front interface.
Features include: Load loops and trigger/mangle them on the fly. Rearrange loop slices using the 'timber reorder' slice arranger in BeatScape's Loop Editor window to make new loops or variations of loops. Built in Step Generator allows users to quickly and visually draw per-step changes in amplitude, panning, pitch, or LP filter with resonance on individual loops or samples. Make your loops sound the way you want with 17 built in high quality effects. With 3 effect inserts per pad, beatscape can handle 48 effects at once. Slices from each loop are mapped to their corresponding MIDI channel for pattern programming. Easy MIDI mapping lets you simultaneously trigger entire loops and individual slices. 4 gigabytes of content arranged as construction kits, broken down into separate layers such as kicks, hats, percussion, snares, synths, and more.
Dimension Pro

TruePianos Amber VSTi Module
One of four modules that currently ship with the full version of TruePianos VSTi, the TruePianos Amber Module will provide SONAR users with world-class, playable piano sounds through its combination sampling, modeling, and synthesis sound design. TruePianos sounds and feels great, just like a real acoustic piano, with all the important characteristics: sympathetic resonance, inter-string harmonics, repedalling and more. Designed to blend transparently with the musician's hands through its unique capabilities of matching to the players own playing style (and characteristics of his/her MIDI keyboard) with the help of intuitive controls. Optimized for real-time performance, with low CPU usage even at 96 khz host sampling rates and advanced polyphony levels.
New Effect Processors
TS 64 Transient Shaper
A powerful tool for sculpting the transient dynamics of any percussive based source material such as drums or guitars. The TS 64 Transient Shaper employs powerful envelope/transient-detection, linear-phase filtering, and gain-shaping to control the dynamics of individual transients of any sound with amplitude variation over time.
The TS 64 Transient Shaper utilizes the same superior linear-phase technology found in SONAR's LP-64 EQ and LP-64 Multiband where the frequency spectrum is split into bands and then summed back together while maintaining the integrity of all processed audio across all frequencies. This provides clear precise control of the timbre of each detected transient without introducing coloration, phase errors, cancellations, comb filtering, or muddy sound. Multi-stage, linear-phase filter algorithm provides frequency dependent gain-adjustment. Level-independent shaping of envelopes allowing for transient sustain to be shortened or extended. Shape audio signal attack phase independently of the decay/sustain phase. Powerful envelope/transient-detection. Great for drum loops and percussion, taming unruly electric guitars, and for improving the attack or fullness of an acoustic guitar or piano. Automatable parameters. Smooth, zipperless output. Full VST functionality for access from dedicated audio editors.
TL-64 Tube Leveler
A line driver/leveling processor that employs advanced analog vacuum-tube circuit modeling algorithms to add the unique qualities of tube color and warmth found in classic recordings to whatever source material it is applied.
TL-64 provides intuitive controls to determine the level and character of analog tube saturation, from subtle "warming" to hard-driving saturation. The TL-64 plug-in features a unique selectable Dynamic Response Filter control that when engaged employs a dynamic (versus static) tube model algorithm. The dynamic tube model behaves more like a real vacuum tube in that its characteristics change over time depending on the input signal. There is also a Bass Compensation control that compensates for any reduction in bass material as a result of low-shelf filtering. The Bass Compensation filter allows you to reduce clipping in the bass bands while still maintaining a flat output response. Powered by Studiodevil (Gallo Engineering) known for their ultra-high-quality analog tube amplifier emulation. Several instances of the TL-64 plug-ins can also be combined in effects chains, along with other processors, EQ, and compressors, to create a limitless palette of virtual analog effects. Dynamic and static tube model algorithms. High quality signal processing algorithms. Switchable oversampling option defeats high-frequency aliasing/quantization noise. Smooth, zipperless output. Automatable parameters. Library of presets. Full VST functionality for access from dedicated audio editors.
Channel Tools
Provides easy and powerful zero-latency channel processing for adjusting L/R channel placement, gain, pan/width, and phase; sample delay for precision timing adjustment of L/R channels in recordings; Automatic Mid-Side decoding of imported Mid-Side recorded material. Channel Tools can also provide a widening or narrowing effect to stereo recordings through adjustments to mid-side gain. Intuitive control over individual placement of the left and right channels anywhere in the stereo field. Automatically decode Mid-Side channel recordings. Fine-tune the timing of recordings by delaying the left and/or right channel by a specific number of samples or milliseconds. Full VST functionality for access from dedicated audio editors.
Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3 LE
Built on the latest guitar amp modeler from Native Instruments; 3 amps and cabinets, 11 effects, tuner, metronome, and over 50 presets.

Google Phone to Finally Debut |

T-Mobile USA has announced it will be unveiling the long-anticipated Google mobile phone, featuring Google's Android software, as soon as next week. It will debut at a press conference in New York. It won't go on sale in the US until next month. T-Mobile is the first carrier to sign up for distributing the G1 Android phone, which is expected to put pressure on the iPhone and the BlackBerry. QUOTE For those of you who have been anticipating the so-called Google Phone as if it were the next iPhone, the wait is almost over.
T-Mobile USA said Tuesday that it would unveil the much-anticipated mobile phone loaded with Google Inc.'s Android software next Tuesday at a news conference in New York. The G1 phone, which is being manufactured by HTC, won't be for sale until October. But expect T-Mobile to finally divulge some key details such as pricing.
T-Mobile is just the first carrier to market the phone. Other cellphone manufacturers and carriers are expected to dial for dollars using the Google brand as bait, but they apparently have hit some snags. The Android phone is being positioned as a rival to Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry.
For Google, this seems like a no-lose proposition. The Internet search giant wants to make sure that all of its services, including its lucrative advertising, are available on all cellphones. So it created software for mobile phones that does that.
Pundits have been saying for years that the mobile Web will dwarf the nonmobile Web once enough people have access to so-called smart phones and all of the bells and whistles that come with them. Already Google is readying a store for downloadable mobile software similar to the one that has proved so successful for the iPhone.
Google showed off the handset at a developer conference in London on Tuesday.
Next week, Google and T-Mobile should start to reveal whether Android will live up to the hype.

The internet is atwitter with Google Chrome's innovative new features, but there was no clear winner in our speed test comparing Firefox and Chrome—which means your choice of browser may depend solely on features. Apart from a few specific issues (namely process management), many of Chrome's best features are already available in Firefox 3, proving yet again the power of extensibility. From incognito browsing and the streamlined download manager to URL highlighting and improved search, let's take a look at how you can bring some of Google Chrome's best features to Firefox. Google Chrome A fresh take on the browser At Google, we spend much of our time working inside a browser. We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And like all of you, in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends - all using a browser. People are spending an increasing amount of time online, and they're doing things never imagined when the web first appeared about 15 years ago. Since we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if you started from scratch and built on the best elements out there. We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser. What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build. So today we're releasing the beta version of a new open source browser: Google Chrome. On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn't the browser that matters. It's only a tool to run the important stuff - the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go. Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today's complex web applications much better . By keeping each tab in an isolated "sandbox", we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built V8, a more powerful JavaScript engine, to power the next generation of web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers. This is just the beginning - Google Chrome is far from done. We've released this beta for Windows to start the broader discussion and hear from you as quickly as possible. We're hard at work building versions for Mac and Linux too, and we'll continue to make it even faster and more robust. We owe a great debt to many open source projects, and we're committed to continuing on their path. We've used components from Apple's WebKit and Mozilla's Firefox, among others - and in that spirit, we are making all of our code open source as well. We hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward. The web gets better with more options and innovation. Google Chrome is another option, and we hope it contributes to making the web even better. But enough from us. The best test of Google Chrome is to try it yourself. SiSoft Sandra 2009 released and loaded with GPGPU benches |
| Posted by cyberber - 09-2-08 22:40 - 0 comments |

SiSoftware has just released yet another updated version of its well-known software tool Sandra - the System ANalyser, Diagnostic and Reporting Assistant. Sandra 2009 comes with massive hardware and software support, CPU, memory, storage benchmarks plus five new modules, four of which are focused on measuring the performance of your graphics cards. The get into the details, the fresh models are:
- Graphics (GPGPU) Processing: Benchmark the graphics performance of the graphics processors (GPGPUs). Such operations are used by specialised software, e.g. scientific software, image manipulation, video decoders/encoders, games that make GPU performance pretty important.
- Graphics (GPGPU) Bandwidth: Benchmark the bandwidth of the memory of the graphics processors (GPGPUs) and the bandwidth of the bus that connects them to your computer. The speed at which the data can be sent to the GPGPUs, internally processed and the results sent back is as important as the processing power of the GPGPUs.
- Video (GFX) Rendering: Benchmark the graphics performance of the video adapters (GFXs). Shows how your graphics processors handle rendering in comparison to other typical graphics processors. Such operations are used by all graphics software, image manipulation, video decoders/encoders, games and modern operating systems.
- Video (GFX) Memory: Benchmark the bandwidth of the memory of the video adapters (GFXs) and the bandwidth of the bus that connects them to your computer.
- Cryptographic Performance: Benchmark the cryptographic performance of modern processors that support hardware cryptographic engines. The most common algorithms, AES (AES128, AES256) for encryption/decryption and SHA (SHA1, SHA256) for hashing are supported.
Coming in six language versions, Sandra 2009 can be purchased from this page http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.html?dir=&location=downandbuy&langx=en&a=. A free to download 'Trial' version is also available (at least in theory).
