Hello!

I was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions on the best quality Windows 7 tweaking program at the moment, especially for performance tweaks? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hands.gif)

Thank you for responding.

Not exactly what you asked for but nevertheless:

http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm

http://bbs.blackviper.com/index.php#c15

I'm more on the lookout for usability enhancements atm myself like an auto-confirm option
for the abominable file/folder save/replace windows 7 common controls,
or a way to get complex file searches that don't require you to type things like
type:="Text Document" datemodified:a long time ago *.log
to get the functionality you had in a gui with WinXP.

Editing a bit to say that imo the best you can do is not use Win7 as a test platform,
prefer portable applications (no installation footprint) when possible,
do your testing in a sandbox (Sandboxie or VMLite are good options) so the system remains in pristine condition.

I've looked at several tweaking utilities but nothing beats a freshly installed OS so the main idea is to keep it
as close to that condition as possible :)

Freeware:
- Ultimate Windows Tweaker
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-v2-a-tweak-ui-for-windows-7-vista#more-1957
- XdN Tweaker
http://xenomorph.net/?page_id=336
Buyware:
- EnhanceMySe7en
http://www.seriousbit.com/tweak_windows_7/
- YL Software WinUtilities Pro
http://www.ylcomputing.com/content/view/9/27/

All of these boast performance optimizations but I stand by my original suggestion for manual optimizations
and keeping the OS as close to fresh install state as possible.

performance tweakers are usually services-tweakers.

less useless services = more performance gain.

personal favorite is Ultimate Windows Tweaker

best all-around general tweakers is XdN Tweaker <- lightweight and portable. another new and lightweight tweaker is Tweak Me! by DiSTANTX http://www.wecode.biz/

they called BLACK BELT FOR TWEAKER (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

CODE
http://www.x-setup.net/

what they claim, :

QUOTE
The mother of all tweaker
Classic mode

X-Setup Pro is a so-called "tweaker" program; it allows you to change settings that are normally hidden deeply in Windows fast and easily. There are many hidden settings in Windows as well as in a lot of other programs and normally you can't change them.

i try this , and yes, they have HUGE setting , i mean a lot of setting that you can change

maybe 2000++ setting that you can change (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

None. They are all money grabbing schemes. Modern architecture OSs (such as Win 7) benefit from hardware upgrades, not from enabling or disabling services (which by the way, when not in use take no CPU cycles at all as they are in stand-by mode, nor any meaningful RAM, as the memory manager won't allow that). A Windows 7 install with, say, 6 to 8GB of RAM (we are talking x64, of course), a fast system drive (SSD), and a nice and huge SATA data drive, will not need much to be a beast. The only thing I tweak is UAC, which I run in quiet mode.

That's exactly the spirit DrNil.
I use "Ultimate Windows Tweaker" only for one purpose: To remove arrows from shortcuts.

Well put, DrNil; I second that!!

Having said that, I use the free version of TweakVI (originally aimed at Vista) purely because I'm lazy. For instance, TweakVI makes it easy for me to remove the arrows from shortcuts, and gives me a nice GUI based way for changing system folder settings. Though I don't use any of the other "performance optimizers" apparently available in that little soft - lol!

I also use the Auto Start Manager in Ace Utilities to stop all those numerous programs (and a few services) from starting up with Windows 7 only to hog system resources. That goes some way to somewhat improve system responsiveness and performance. Though in all honesty, at least IMHO, with today's large amounts of RAM and modern hardware & OS architecture any gains received from cutting down on services and start-up programs are strictly speaking no longer as significant as they used to be, let's say, 5 or 10 years ago.

Anther thing one should keep in mind is the OS's registry. A clean registry can help overall system (actually, OS) performance. Though your registry would have to be very, very bloated before you'd notice any serious performance degradation. Still, jv16-PowerTools has always done a great job for me in cleaning / fixing any registry issues.

Seems like overkill to use such an app to do just that, when Autoruns (which I am sure is vastly superior) is free and written by one of the most knowledgeable tech guys regarding Windows (Mark Russinovich, Windows Sysinternals). Autoruns when ran as an Admin is the most powerful tool for the job you described.

Can anyone test this GodeMode, i dont use win7

QUOTE
Windows 7 God Mode

I've gotten a number of emails about a Windows 7 "God Mode" feature, and while I haven't had time to check it out thoroughly, it's now making the rounds internally at Microsoft too, so that (somewhat) suggests it's legit. What it basically is, is an extended control panel that allows you to control various aspects of the OS that are not typically surfaced via a GUI.

Here's how you enable it:

Create a new folder (right-click and click on “New Folder”). Right-click on the folder and click on rename, copy and paste this: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

What comes up is a Control Panel like window with sections for Action Center ("Check security status" and so on), Administrative Tools, and AutoPlay.

Nothing major, frankly, but interesting. Use at your own risk, of course.

Can't you bother to search? Even to read? Three posts below this one is my post about the AdminMode Control Panel. The GodMode is an idiocy that came later, it was always called AdminMode, although the name doesn't matter. Whatever you name it before the "dot" is irrelevant. IdiotMode, for example.

Mostly agree with DrNil but I am also with Dimtam I hate overlay arrows over shortcuts.
One thing though my windows7 is 64bit pro version with an ATI card I am not familiar nor pleased with its current display so I like to tweak some settings if possible.
I find accessibility to control panel a bit fiddly for instance when my network communication went south due to an large windows automatic update I could have done better with some tweaking, luckily I managed to update linksys firmware and that was all I needed notwithstanding took me over 8 hours to work it all out.

Thanks once again, DrNil. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

Yes, Mark is truly a great guy, have been using his Process Explorer utility since ages. Will give Autorun another go with Win7. Last time I used it (admittedly under Vista) it gave me all sorts of headaches (though I never bother to work out why). Still, I sort of like Ace Utilities - it's a nifty little collection of easy to use GUI based tools - never had any issues with it, nor reason to complain about how it does what it does. Granted, jv16 does certain things better & more effectively, but for novice users I usually recommend Ace Utilities.
