My two 500GB external hard drives are unaccessible due to my mistake. What did I do?

I had two 500 GB WD Passport external hard drives connected to my laptop. When I left home, I hibernate my laptop and disconnect the two external hard drives. When I arrived at my office, I reconnect the two hard drives to my laptop, but in wrong USB ports, port order reversed. I turned on the laptop and the two external drives did not work correctly. I disconnected them without using Safe Remove and reconnect them back on. Neither of the two external hard drives is accessible.

Can anyone tell me what to do?

Many thanks in advance.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) First of all, relax and give yourself some time to think about it more carefully...

Secondly, you can check if they work on a pc of one of your friends or neighbors...

It's something that can happen to anyone, I'm almost sure that you will find a solution soon enough, just think more carefully before acting (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smokeing.gif)

Can you please hear them and tell us if they work I mean if they spin or not (is it a hardware or just software related problem?)...

There are plenty of software solutions if it's only software related...

Best wishes,
Nantia

It doesn't matter which USB ports you have them plugged into.

I would be looking first to shutdown the laptop correctly and then before switching on again plug them in one at a time.

Hibernate is one of the most dangerous options there is.

I recently repaired a desktop that had been 'dead' for some two years.

It had been allowed to hibernate but refused to come out of it.

Look for software to repair USB drives - see if they can access them.

It is not a hardware problem, but a software problem. I think the partition is damaged.

And somehow this becomes a software problem?

Try to ascertain whether there is life on those Passports by checking them on a different machine, OK?

Good news! I have successfully restored data for one Passport. I have tried several software. Finally, it was a small free software that save all my data. Will let you know the details shortly.

:-)

Now I need to work on the other Passport.

TestDisk should be able to repair your partitions if that indeed is the problem.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/sweatingbullets.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yeahyeah.gif) I'm very happy reading that you found a solution for the one of your hard disks! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mml.gif)

As soon as you managed to recover the whole partition you should have all your data successfully recovered, is that true?

How much time did it take you to recover it completely?

I'm looking forward for the detailed procedure and the name of that little program! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hopefully it has the same problem so the solution would be the same... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smokeing.gif)

I am not as lucky with the second Passport. I lost about 50% of data.

The software I used is EASEUS Partition Master 5.0.1 Home Edition.

Damn it, only 50% (IMG:style_emoticons/default/angry.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Thanks for the info about the software... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

Well don't lose your hope... Use another recovery application and try to recover the other 50%... You gonna do so, isn't it?

Please if it's easy for you don't write any data on your second drive for a while as soon as we could find a solution... I'm looking for recovery applications, be patient...

I suggest you the following:

Many thanks. I will try it.

Since I have partly restored the partition, I cannot do anything to the partition any more. What I can do is to try to restore the lost folders and files. I have tried Recover NT and Spotnau's Data Recovery Kit. Because my Passport is a 500GB, it takes about 9 hours to scan the whole disk. That is too long.

Right now, I try to avoid write anything to this 500GB. I have copied all the recovered data to another external hard drive and will work on the lost folders and files slowly.

Looking back, another partition software might be able to do a better job for the partition.

Thanks.

I agree with you!

What I can do is to try to restore the lost folders and files.

That's exactly what I would do if I were you... Just do the same! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

I recommended you to try Runtime GetDataBack For NTFS or for FAT v4.x because I have already tried it and I'm more than satisfied of its "efficiency"! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smokeing.gif)

I have done it in the night just before going to bed (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

As soon as you have already copied all your recovered data to a safe place, you can try other partition recovery applications or even Runtime GetDataBack to check if it could give you better results! I don't really know if you have the time and /or the patience to do so, but from my point of view it worths your time!

Anyway, I'm really looking forward for results, because data loss is always ones worst nightmare and a lot of people interesting in finding a trustworthy and efficient solution... If you don't mind, please keep us informed (thanks in advance) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

Nantia,

Many thanks. The result is great! I have recovered about 99% of the lost data. I like the Runtime GetDataBack very much; it can rebuild the folder structure.

Again, many thanks!
