A flaw in Sun Microsystems's plug-in for running Java on a variety of browsers and operating systems could allow a virus to spread through Microsoft Windows and Linux PCs. The vulnerability, found by Finnish security researcher Jouko Pynnonen in June, was patched last month by Sun Microsystems, but its details were not made public until Tuesday. Security information provider Secunia posted information about the flaw in an advisory that rated it a "highly critical" threat. The Java plug-in enables small Web programs, known as applets, to run safely on a user's computer. But the security flaw allows a malicious Web site accessed through a victim's browser to bypass those protections.

"It allows execution of attacker-supplied code without user interaction (apart from viewing a Web page) which usually means a "critical" classification," Pynonnen stated in an e-mail interview with CNET News.com. "The same exploit could also be used against various operating systems and browsers, which makes it more serious," he added. The vulnerability can be used to attack systems running on Windows or Linux, for example, and using major browser software such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Firefox--meaning a large number of systems are vulnerable to attack.

Why download and patch this old version?

J2SE 5.0 JRE includes the JVM technology is available since a long time ago.
Also, if you run Azureus Bottorrent client, this is the version that their site recommends.

You must update JRE 1.4.x / 1.3.x to JRE 1.4.2_06 / 1.3.1_13;
J2SE SDK 1.4.x / 1.3.x to J2SE SDK 1.4.2_06 / 1.3.1_13.

There is NO this security flaw in version 1.5.0.

To be honest I've switched to 1.4.2_08 at my windows box since a while ago (after Azureus 2.3.0.2).
This version is well debugged, and uses much less RAM than JRE 5.0 (some 25% less with Azureus). Not tried update 4 yet, but 3 was kind of hog and a couple of minor issues hadn't been addressed.

64-bit not working for me, Vista Ultimate x64. No Control Panel entry and plugin not working for IE7 or Firefox 2.004. 32-bit version works fine on same OS. Has better installer too, maybe they knew!

It is a known problem. The 64-bit version doesn't work in Vista 64 and doesn't display the Control Panel icon.

Use the 32-bit version. It works fine in Vista 64. But it still doesn't have the Control Panel icon. But you can open the Java Control Panel using javacpl.exe. You can find it here: C:\Program Files\Java\jrexxxx\bin

Actually, I can access the Control Panel icon using the 32-bit version, it's under the heading "View 32-bit Control Panel Items" if you display the Control Panel as a menu from your Start button. Just can't change the location of the Temporary Internet Files in the Java Control Panel itself though...

The downloading seems quite troublesome. One can't seem to use FlashGet to download or even Firefox to download properly. Had to use IE 7 and got it after several tries. Refuse to use their inhouse downloader.
